About Ellie Hey there! My name is Ellie Bambury, I’m the author of ‘The Big Sister Project’ and founder of the Make Way programmes. I’m 25 and live in Auckland, New Zealand. My passion has always been in storytelling and the arts, and in 2016 I graduated with a Degree in Performing and Screen Arts, majoring in Writing and Directing for Screen and Theatre. As well as writing, my passions are travelling and capturing life’s moments on camera. I also love keeping fit, exploring the outdoors, socialising, and getting involved in creative projects (see www.ejbcreative.weebly.com).In 2013, a little French boy named Antonin stole my heart when I became his au pair. Today, we’re inseparable – despite living continents apart.Every single day was full of challenges and rewards, and I am grateful for every single one of them. Being an au pair allowed me to travel overseas at a young age, learn how to live with different people, speak another language and build lifelong connections. In 2017, I visited the family again after they’d moved to America. Without me realising it at the time, witnessing their journey speaking English and adjusting to finding their feet in a foreign country triggered something inside me, and when I returned to NZ, the title ‘The Big Sister Project’ popped into my head. Looking back, I see how witnessing their growth and feeling a strong sense of pride in their development made me want to rediscover the journey I went on as their au pair.I explore the humanistic side of au pairing – how it feels to be 18 and going to a foreign place to do something completely new. What it’s like trying to live up to expectations that may not even exist. How to reflect on experiences and make better decisions. What it’s like to get sick overseas, and feel like you want to go home. Making friends. Language barriers. Food mishaps. Conflict aversion. Misunderstandings. Beautiful moments. And so, so much more. The process of writing, editing, analysing and reevaluating everything has given me a sturdy, dynamic set of tools that I genuinely believe can help absolutely anybody figure out where they are going in life, and make conscious decisions as to their next steps. I combine these tools with creative, interactive activities in my personal discovery and development workshops – Make Way.If you’d like to get a handle on where this all began, get yourself a copy of my story.
